Thoughts on Nanatsu No Taizai and Why I Decided to Drop This Animé

Nanatsu No Taizai or The Seven Deadly Sins is an animé set in a somewhat European-themed kingdom where there are Holy Knights, King, Princesses and such. Now before I begin sharing my thoughts on the animé itself, I would like to mention that I have watched Akame Ga Kill first which has a not-so-similar-but-cant-help-but-compare concept. There are tyrannical knights, there are groups of people supposedly tagged as “rebels” but actually are on the right side of things. Having watched AgL first affected me watching the show in a way that I sometimes find their (Liones people) “struggles” less unfortunate than that of AgL-people.

Overpowered Main Characters

That scene when Gilthunder threw a spear from wherever part of (let’s say) central town he was to the village where Meliodas (Dragon’s Sin of Wrath) was and he (Meliodas) was still able to catch (after being pushed a distance of course) and return the spear back was EPIC. Like totally badass to the nth level. The fact that it happened only in the early episode means it was intended to make anyone hooked to the animé right away (that is, if you’re a fan of OP characters). Like a sirt of greetings to the viewers.

I liked the thought that they have to search for other Seven Deadly Sins members one by one. It builds excitement on me as I wonder what kind of powers will the others have. What kind of personality they have. Meliodas, sorry to say, was boring if not in action or fighting scenes. Liz was (again, sorry) so dumb. I’m not a big fan of ecchi nor am I a hater (I loved Shokugeki btw) but the way she doesn’t react to Meliodas’ harassing her was annoying as hell. I would have been contented with any reaction (is she okay with it, is she not okay with it)but no! She acts like nothing happened every single effing time. I’m just glad there is someone like Hawk (talking, hilarious pig) in the early episodes. If not for Hawk, I wouldn’t have learned about the other good characters.

OTPs Everywhere

Out of all Seven Deadly Sins members who had enough screen time on the animé, my favourite would be Ban (Fox’s Sin of Greed). He’s an aggresive fighter (perks of immortality). He knows when to make the right call (kill or not to kill) if he thinks it is better to end people’s sufferings. Despite his teasing personality, my first impression of him was that he appears to be sad inside as seen in the way he talks (girl’s intuition, lol) or the use of words or just his eyes. I was right. He had a broken love story. His’ and Elaine’s story are one of the best stories inside the animé. It gives a nice tingling feeling in your heart. Maybe because Elaine is pure and innocent. Maybe because Ban, despite his scheming appearance, is honest and trustworthy. They were perfect for each other. I was a bit hesitant at first to be honest because Elaine looked like a kid and Ban would looked like a Pedophile if they ended up together. But then Elaine explains her age and I juts learned to accept how young she looks (still weird).

I also liked Diane (Serpent’s Sin of Envy) and King’s (Grizzly’s Sin if Sloth) story as revealed towards the end. Diane despite her massive size is too cute and adorable. Not sure if I’m right but she must be a perfect example of what a “Moe” character is. I totally understand why King is head over heels in love  with her and why he’s protecting her with all his might.

Gowther (Goat’s Sin of Lust) is, I hate to say this, is more boring than Meliodas already is. I know that there has to be a quiet, somewhat dense, type of person in their group to keep the balance but usually those characters turns out to be pretty reliable and powerful. He was helpless on that last arc where they fight all out with the Knights who have also powers. That’s too much of a disappointment since I’m a big fan of  those type of personalities.

Where I Dropped Watching The Animé

At episode 14, I start to feel not good about this animé.

  1.  I can’t stand Liz’ character (as I have explained above). As a girl, I tend to favor an animé with a likable female MC
  2. I got turned off with the OP main characters. Ban is immortal. Meliodas still has something more powerful hidden in his sleeves. They are basically invincible. There are not enough characters that looked like a threat anymore

So I asked my fellow otaku friends whether I should continue watching the show, is it worth my time, something along thise lines. One of them said yes. So I did. I still liked it with the following episodes. But then I was halfway through Episode 23, when I felt like I’m no longer interested in the outcome. Really. I know it’s just two episodes more but when I lose interest on a show, I’d rather not watch it anymore than waste my precious time finishing it. I’m just not the type of peroson who would “finish what I’ve started no matter what”. Nope. I have to have a resason or purpose and when that’s already lost, I stopped.

Wait, why am I being overly dramatic over this? Lol!

Have you watched Nanatsu No Taizai as well? Who’s your favourite character on this show? Tell me your thoughts on the comment section below!

The Liebster Award

Hey guys, I’ve been nominated for the Liebster Award. Yay! This blog has been active for quite a while now but since yours truly is having a hard time trying to post consistently, you could say I’m still a baby blogger right now. As I have said before, I’ve only realized recently what I want to focus on my blog (see my tagline above) and so far I’ve never enjoyed anything as much as writing about those things I liked.

I would like to thank Wonderful Words 101 for nominating me in this award. This is my second nomination actually but the first one already deleted (or changed maybe?) her site before I can even respond. I can’t waste another person’s effort again to nominate me. Again, thank you for appreciating my blog!

Here are the Rules for the Award

  • Thank the person who nominated you and answer the 11 questions they’ve written for you.
  • Nominate 11 people and give them 11 different questions to answer.

Here are my Answers to the Questions from Wonderful Words 101

If you can only read one book in your lifetime, what would it be?

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This book confirmed that my views in the society and the people are mostly right. I once dreamed of becoming a lawyer just like Atticus but my current situation suggests I should choose other ways to follow his philosophies in life. Actually, when I was younger, I’m more like Jem than Scout.

What is your favorite genre in a novel?

I’ve always liked the good feeling I get when reading Young Adult Literature books. Whether it has a happy ending or not, it’s always worth a read.

Have you ever ‘forgotten’ in finishing a book after taking a break from it?

Yes, I believe so. But I don’t remember what books are those, it’s still forgotten till now. (Lol) Really. I’m not trying to start a game of logic with you here. Once I start a book, I always try to finish it as soon as possible. However, it has to suit my mood. To me, reading a book is finding relaxation or looking for a diversion. If it doesn’t get me relaxed or it doesn’t make me feel like I was part of that book’s world, it’ll be hard for me to finish it.

Do you prefer classic literature or contemporary literature?

Contemporary, I guess. I haven’t read a lot of classic books yet to say I prefer them. I liked to read books about love but most classic ones ends in a bad way so I try to avoid them.

If you can change one major event in any fiction novel, which book would it be, and which event?

When Sirius died in Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix. I know people would say it’s essential to the story to keep the balance or whatever it is but given the chance, I wouldn’t let him die. I want him to be Harry’s guardian until the end. I want him to spend time with Harry not afraid of being taken to Azkaban again. I want him to get married and start a family of his own.

What book possesses the highest amount of language difficulty for you to read?

Up until now, it’s the Lord of The Rings trilogy. I’m still looking for a copy actually because the last time I read it and had a hard time was back when I was 16. Maybe now that I got older, I’ll find it easier.

If you were to have one wish granted, what would it be? (wishing for multiple wishes is prohibited)

Hmm. This is hard since there are a lot of things to wish for. I guess I’ll just wish for all people to understand and care for each other no matter what race or religion they belong. I don’t like where the world is going right now (if we based it on news). It seems like no one is learning from the mistakes of the past.

Would you rather be a CEO of a major company or a famous writer?

A famous writer, of course.

Who is your favorite villain/antagonist from a book or movie?

My favourite antagonist would be President Snow from the Hunger Games. He understands Katniss and knows everything that goes through her mind, what scares her, what keeps her going, what she’d do next and how to counter it. I had a feeling there was never a fight between Katniss and the other tributes in the 74th or 75th Hunger Games. It has always been a fight between Katniss and President Snow ever since she volunteered for Prim. That made the book/movie more exciting to me.

Who is your least favorite hero/protagonist from a book or movie?

Since last question is already a sci-fi, YA, kind of book, I’m sticking to that genre til here. My least favorite hero would be Tris from Divergent series. I just don’t like what she did in the end. She’s a stop-and-go fighter and there’s never an assurance with people like her.

Choose one: infinite money or immortality? and why?

Infinite money because I can share it with evryone unlike immortality which will not benefit anyone except myself.

That is all the questions and answers for me. Now, it’s my turn to nominate and ask questions.

Thoughts on Mirai Nikki (TV) and Introducing the Queen of Psycho – I mean, Yanderes

I never had plans on watching Mirai Nikki until I saw a gif of Yuno on Facebook and asked my (fellow otaku) friend about this particular character.

Her: That’s the famous queen of Yanderes.
Me: From what animé?
Her: Mirai Nikki
Me: Is it good?
Her: I don’t know. I haven’t watched it yet.

So to spare my friend more questions, I decided yo watch it and see for myself. First off, for those who are not familiar with the term “yandere” or have heard it but doesn’t know it’s meaning, here’s a simple definition from the urban dictionary:

Yandere – A common term in otaku fandom, a yandere is a person (usually female) romantically obsessed with someone to the point of using violent means to get them in their arms. Often seen with a sharp weapon and a psychotic grin.

Honestly, I don’t know the meaning of this term before watching it. I’m only familiar with the Tsundere (because of Tyga from Toradora!) and Dandere types (I think Hawkeye  from FMAB is an example). Anyway, I like to learn everything slowly and that includes knowing what the “dere” types are. I know I’ve read about all the types before but since they all ended in “dere”, I got confused and haven’t memorized the terms and their meanings all at once. I figured out the best way to memorize is to watch a character portray such traits.

You see, the queen of Yanderes happens to be in this animé. (Warning: There will be spoilers in this article so if you’re interested to know the story yourself, you can stop right here.) Continue reading

A Train of Thoughts on Holding Up The Universe by Jennifer Niven

I want you to know I’m rooting for you.

Holding Up The Universe is the second book written by Jennifer Niven that I bought. After reading this, I can say she’s my new favourite author now. I bought this book when I passed by a bookstore last week. Being the impulsive buyer as I am, I grabbed it once I saw her name on it. She still owe me big time for making me cry because of All The Bright Places (the first book). I have a lot of expectations to begin with.

The book I bought is for international sale which has an exclusive letter to Filipino fans.

I wonder if all other countries have one or she’s really built a certain connection with Filipino fans? (I did send her a letter after reading All the Bright Places, by the way, to which I have yet to receive a response. Not that I’m expecting to receive one though.)

As a fan of YA, this book is literally gold. Jennifer has the ability to make a good story from two persons point of view and still make them both unique and relatable. I find it hard to read books with two different POV’s but Jennifer’s writing makes it easy to distinguish the two. One of the reasons why I bought it actually is to make sure that ATBP isn’t a miracle. That she will continue to write good reads through and through. With this book, she’s proven to be the next big thing in YA universe.

I like Libby and Jack. They’re not fictional characters. You see them in your neighborhood, your school, classroom, office and grocery stores. They’re one of the realest character you could read in a book. Though having prosopagnosia (face-blindness, not being able to recognize faces) is rare and not that much known, everyone of us is damaged in our own way. It’s pretty much the same.

We’re all weird and damaged in our own way. You’re not the only one.

Anime Review: Mob Psycho 100

Watching Mob Psycho 100 is like a big slap on my face, or a friend’s voice talking “Here are the kinds of animé you’re missing because of your stupid, childish preferences.”

I admit it. When I watched Mob Psycho 100’s first episode, I thought I can’t (and won’t) finish the series. I don’t like watching animés with weird style of drawing or art. I do watch animé for the plot, relatable characters, entertainment value, and everything but the drawing has to be, I don’t know the right word, understandable? Tolerable? Normal? Mob Psycho’s art is not like that.

The Show

But then, (a week after) as I was searching for something to watch again, I came across a comment giving high praises to it and I thought of giving this animé a second chance. So I watched the second episode and without even realizing it, I finished the whole thing. (Will there be a second Season?)

Mob Psycho 100 exceeds my expectation. No doubt, it’s one of the best shounen out there. In fact, I’m putting it on the same level as Shingeki comparing the “excitement” I felt while watching them are pretty much the same. The concept isn’t new but the story-telling is superb. I’m not referring to the narrator voice but the whole sequence of story, pacing and even the way characters are introduced looked interesting.

The Characters

The main protagonist, Kageyama Shigeo a.k.a. Mob, is an awkward student but he’s freaking powerful and reliable most of the time. How can you not like him? He’s not the typical “main character” who gets to experience hardships at first and tries his best to defeat his opponents. No! He hates fighting people and he’s sworn not to use his powers against humans. However, this also backfires at him since bottling up his emotions causes an explosion of power on his side. Anyway, he doesn’t care about being a psychic or an esper most of the time. If there’s one thing he’s trying to achieve, it’s to be popular in his own terms. (Not in a bad way, no. Just an innocent boy wanting to be popular to get the girl he likes to like him back (although the girl was not given too much emphasis))). It’s hard to relate to him at first but he has grown on me naturally. Hmm. How do I explain that? Imagine how your friend does weird things sometimes (like saying “Hi!” whenever he/she spots a CCTV camera) and you just shrug it off because that’s his/her normal thing. That’s same feeling I get with Mob. Weird but normal.  Continue reading

Day 4 – Favourite Hokage

My favourite Hokage would have been Naruto if ain’t for his dad. Who wouldn’t love Yondaime Hokage Namikaze Minato?

Day 4 – Favourite Hokage

Our first encounter with Yondaime (also, Naruto’s first) convinced me he was not just “fit” to have the Hokage title but he’s far more than that. In his short conversation with Naruto, we’ve had a glimpse of someone who has a heart and a mind of a leader. He did not only think of helping his son but also tried to explain where Pain (who was an enemy then) was coming from.

“Pain was the one who killed Jiraiya-sensei, but the more I think about it, the more I believe he was killed by that disorder that gave birth to Pain.”

– Minato to Naruto

His insight helped Naruto in handling Pain (which meant convincing him to have faith in him afterward). But I’m not dwelling on the whole Pain Invasion Arc here. As I was saying, Minato was.. there’s no other word for it.. AWESOME.

He didn’t have a Sharingan, Byakugan, or a Tailed Beast inside him (not counting after death, of course) but his superb intellect and  unrivaled techniques make up for it. Continue reading

Messi Trending #1 on Twitter (Philippines) Because of Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo

Korean dramas have become so popular all over the world, thanks to the Hallyu Wave that took us by storm for the last few years or so. The Philippines is one of the countries which has huge followers or viewers of Kdramas.

Most Korean Dramas are being dubbed in Filipino and aired in National TV . Even the ongoing dramas in Korea are being watched by a lot of Filipinos in English subs.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo is no exception.

For those who haven’t heard of this show, it’s a story of college students in a sports university trying to fulfill their dreams in representing the National Team (Korea) and finding love in the process. (Note: No matter where the setting is, a Kdrama will always be about love.)

Last Saturday, Lionel Messi‘s name was trending on Twitter all because of Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo! I’ll be honest with you. I don’t know who Messi is (please don’t judge me, Messi fans). I just know he’s a popular soccer player (heard it from my sister who’s a big soccer fan) but I haven’t watched him play yet. Heck, I haven’t watched a single soccer game on TV.

What has Messi got to do with the drama anyway?

Favourite Team: Ino-Shika-Cho!

When we talk about teams in Naruto, this might be the first “team” that comes up in everyone’s mind. Generations after generations have made this teamwork exceptional because of the three clans friendship. And yes, I’m talking about the Ino-Shika-Cho trio.

Day 3 – Favourite Team

I’ve got nothing more to say to you three. Your Ino-Shika-Chō formation was perfect! – Asuma

Team Asuma or Team 10.

With Sarutobi Asuma as their captain, these three proved themselves to be one of the best Shinobis out there. I hope I can talk more about Asuma without feeling depressed. *breathe in, breathe out* No. I can’t. So I’ll stop here.

Here are Three Reasons Why I Love This Team

1. Teamwork at its best. We all know that these three argue about petty things sometimes during their childhood days (or even when they’re older!), but they always show us the perfect teamwork in battles and missions. I love the fact that each of them knows each other or cares for each other so much. Though I must admit, Ino’s attempt to encourage Choji to go on a diet failed miserably until the end, this baka-trio works better with a few bickering at start.

2. Ino-Shika-Cho Formation. The famous formation specifically for the members of the Yamanaka, Nara and Akimichi clans is one of the reasons why the bond between these three goes deeply. So deep, it stems from the roots of their ancestors!

3. They complement each other. Shikamaru is one of the best strategist in the Shinobi World. Ino, with her mind-affecting technique, can communicate any strategy made by Shikamaru to a number of people using telepathy (we’ve seen this super useful skills during the Fourth Shinobi War!). Choji is big enough and strong enough to protect these two while at this type of work. These three proved to be dependable during the most crucial times.

How about you? Who’s your favorite team in Naruto? Comment yours below and as thanks for stopping by!
