Nanatsu No Taizai or The Seven Deadly Sins is an animé set in a somewhat European-themed kingdom where there are Holy Knights, King, Princesses and such. Now before I begin sharing my thoughts on the animé itself, I would like to mention that I have watched Akame Ga Kill first which has a not-so-similar-but-cant-help-but-compare concept. There are tyrannical knights, there are groups of people supposedly tagged as “rebels” but actually are on the right side of things. Having watched AgL first affected me watching the show in a way that I sometimes find their (Liones people) “struggles” less unfortunate than that of AgL-people.
Overpowered Main Characters
That scene when Gilthunder threw a spear from wherever part of (let’s say) central town he was to the village where Meliodas (Dragon’s Sin of Wrath) was and he (Meliodas) was still able to catch (after being pushed a distance of course) and return the spear back was EPIC. Like totally badass to the nth level. The fact that it happened only in the early episode means it was intended to make anyone hooked to the animé right away (that is, if you’re a fan of OP characters). Like a sirt of greetings to the viewers.
I liked the thought that they have to search for other Seven Deadly Sins members one by one. It builds excitement on me as I wonder what kind of powers will the others have. What kind of personality they have. Meliodas, sorry to say, was boring if not in action or fighting scenes. Liz was (again, sorry) so dumb. I’m not a big fan of ecchi nor am I a hater (I loved Shokugeki btw) but the way she doesn’t react to Meliodas’ harassing her was annoying as hell. I would have been contented with any reaction (is she okay with it, is she not okay with it)but no! She acts like nothing happened every single effing time. I’m just glad there is someone like Hawk (talking, hilarious pig) in the early episodes. If not for Hawk, I wouldn’t have learned about the other good characters.
Out of all Seven Deadly Sins members who had enough screen time on the animé, my favourite would be Ban (Fox’s Sin of Greed). He’s an aggresive fighter (perks of immortality). He knows when to make the right call (kill or not to kill) if he thinks it is better to end people’s sufferings. Despite his teasing personality, my first impression of him was that he appears to be sad inside as seen in the way he talks (girl’s intuition, lol) or the use of words or just his eyes. I was right. He had a broken love story. His’ and Elaine’s story are one of the best stories inside the animé. It gives a nice tingling feeling in your heart. Maybe because Elaine is pure and innocent. Maybe because Ban, despite his scheming appearance, is honest and trustworthy. They were perfect for each other. I was a bit hesitant at first to be honest because Elaine looked like a kid and Ban would looked like a Pedophile if they ended up together. But then Elaine explains her age and I juts learned to accept how young she looks (still weird).
I also liked Diane (Serpent’s Sin of Envy) and King’s (Grizzly’s Sin if Sloth) story as revealed towards the end. Diane despite her massive size is too cute and adorable. Not sure if I’m right but she must be a perfect example of what a “Moe” character is. I totally understand why King is head over heels in love with her and why he’s protecting her with all his might.
Gowther (Goat’s Sin of Lust) is, I hate to say this, is more boring than Meliodas already is. I know that there has to be a quiet, somewhat dense, type of person in their group to keep the balance but usually those characters turns out to be pretty reliable and powerful. He was helpless on that last arc where they fight all out with the Knights who have also powers. That’s too much of a disappointment since I’m a big fan of those type of personalities.
Where I Dropped Watching The Animé
At episode 14, I start to feel not good about this animé.
- I can’t stand Liz’ character (as I have explained above). As a girl, I tend to favor an animé with a likable female MC
- I got turned off with the OP main characters. Ban is immortal. Meliodas still has something more powerful hidden in his sleeves. They are basically invincible. There are not enough characters that looked like a threat anymore
So I asked my fellow otaku friends whether I should continue watching the show, is it worth my time, something along thise lines. One of them said yes. So I did. I still liked it with the following episodes. But then I was halfway through Episode 23, when I felt like I’m no longer interested in the outcome. Really. I know it’s just two episodes more but when I lose interest on a show, I’d rather not watch it anymore than waste my precious time finishing it. I’m just not the type of peroson who would “finish what I’ve started no matter what”. Nope. I have to have a resason or purpose and when that’s already lost, I stopped.
Wait, why am I being overly dramatic over this? Lol!
